Brainspotting in a newer approach to therapy that incorporates body awareness, mindfulness, trauma therapy, and parts work. It was initially developed by David Grand in 2003, and is now used widely to support trauma healing and resolving internal distress.
Brainspotting does work, but research is still catching up to this newer approach. Studies have shown that brainspotting is as effective or more effective than other trauma healing approaches.
The brainspotting therapy session is different from a typical talk-based therapy session. The focus is on looking inwards, noticing thoughts, feelings, internal experiences. The therapist is right there with you to offer support and compassion. The mindfulness processing involved in brainspotting does not require analyzing, logic, or even talking. Brainspotting aims to work with the lower non-verbal parts of our nervous systems.
