Neuroaffirming Brainspotting

We all have different ways of thinking, feeling, communicating and experiencing the world. There is no “normal brain,” but too often we feel pushed to conform to one way of being.

Brainspotting that honors different brains

Those of us who are autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or have other neurological differences are not disordered; we interact with the world in different ways. A neurodiversity-affirming practice honors and values those differences.

Those of us with neurodivergent minds often experience mental health issues related to “not fitting in,” trauma and everyday stressors. In my work as a therapist, I strive to honor our neurological differences in our sessions. Brainspotting doesn’t require analyzing, logic, or even talking, and I offer you control and choice throughout the therapy process.

Five principles I hold in our work

Flexibility

Client choice and control; flexibility in theoretical approach and modalities; adaptations and accommodations; feedback-informed ways of working.

Lifelong learning

Continuing to learn about the neurodiversity paradigm, from voices of lived experience, and about how ableism, masking and minority stress, complex trauma, depression, anxiety and shame affect mental health.

Acceptance

Honoring your culture, identities and worldview; your autonomy, strengths and needs; presuming competence; welcoming every way of expressing emotion, thought, behavior and communication.

Advocacy

Rejecting the pathology paradigm, ableism and oppression; promoting inclusion, acceptance and accommodations; supporting advocacy in and outside the therapy room.

Genuineness

Critical self-reflection; compassion for self and others; safe use of self and disclosure; humility and a non-expert approach.
