Becoming certified in brainspotting can be a big commitment. I hope that the below information can help you understand the certification process and determine if it is right for you! Please reach out if I can any help as you consider certification, I am happy to share my experiences with you or serve as your formal brainspotting consultant.
It depends! If you are a licensed therapist, you do not need a certification to incorporate brainspotting into your practice, you can begin using brainspotting immediately after phase 1 training. But many therapists decide to pursue certification in brainspotting to grow their skills, confidence, and competence in practicing brainspotting therapy. Becoming a certified brainspotting therapist opens doors to many learning and growth opportunities. If you are passionate about brainspotting therapy and you want more support, learning, and guidance in your practice then certification may be the path for you. Some of the benefits of certification include:
To start the process of becoming certified in brainspotting, you will need to complete both phase 1 and phase 2 brainspotting trainings. The trainings are usually 3 days long each, and offer time to learn, practice, and receive different forms of brainspotting with other therapists. Phase 1 training includes an introduction to brainspotting theory and practice. Phase 2 training adds advanced skills and additional practice to your brainspotting therapy repertoire. If you work with clients with complex needs (severe and persistent mental illness, complex trauma, substance use, etc.), I would encourage you to find additional trainings and learning opportunities to support your practice. Once you have completed phase 1 training, you can begin to start practicing and logging your brainspotting practice hours using the session form.
In addition to the trainings, you will need to complete 50 hours of documented practice guided by a brainspotting consultant. The brainspotting consultant is a certified brainspotting therapist who has graduated from the Consultant in Training (CIT) program and is authorized to provide consulting for folks working towards certification. You will meet with your consultant at least 6 times for case consultation, learning, and discussion. It is important that you find a consultant who fits your strengths, values, interests, and area of practice. I might be a good fit as your consultant if you are interested in community mental health, social justice, cultural humility, and/or neurodiversity affirming care. Otherwise, you can find a list of consultants by clicking here.
The final step in brainspotting certification is to submit all required documentation and fees. The following documents must be completed and submitted to Brainspotting Trainings, LLC:
· Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Practice
· Brainspotting Application Form
· Session Tracking Form (showing at least 50 hours of practice)
· Consultant Reporting Form (signed and sent in by consultant)
· $150 certification fee
